When we started business in 2001, many people surfed the web using dial up modems. Performance was an essential part of a good visitor experience.

Today, whilst many visitors have broadband connections, a lot of web sites are developed without any concept of optimisation. Just because your audience has a fast connection, doesn't mean they are prepared to wait for your site to load. Ten years ago visitors would wait 30 – 40 seconds before switching off, today you typically get less than 5 seconds.
