Why consider web site security!

For the majority of businesses, the web is now an essential part of doing business. Regardless of whether you have a full e-commerce facility or just a page of information about your organisation, maintaining web site security should be at the top of your action plan.

If you provide an online shop, you may be focused on safety of credit card details, however, whilst important - this is only one of many issues requiring consideration.  In the digital age, information is currency. The growth of identity theft means your client’s personal data is just as important as their credit card details.

Even if your web site does not request or collect this type of information, if not secure, it may be compromised and used to facilitate attacks on your customer’s computers.  A technique called ‘drive by hijacking’ is used to infect visitor’s machines by installing malicious software via a compromised web page. This software or ‘malware’ then harvests personal data such as banking information etc., directly from the victim’s computer and send it back to the software author via the internet. This type of compromise can prove a costly liability and have a damaging effect on brand loyalty.
